Short-term Goal Setting

Short-term goal setting is the key to achieving bigger goals

The best way to achieve goals is to go in for short-term goal setting. The short-term goals are like small steps. They are less daunting, more realistic, and certainly more achievable. Each step that you climb takes you closer to your target.

There are two ways to break your main goal into short-term goals. The first is by time. You need to assign a deadline to achieve each small goal. This deadline should be based on realistic targets. For instance, if you want to earn a Masters degree in technology you need to break your goal into two small elements. These are: Time you need to finish under graduation and time you need to get admitted into an M-Tech course. You also need to provide for an extra year in case you fail to qualify in the first attempt.

The second is on account of circumstances or need. It is quite possible that all students may not afford an M-tech course soon after finishing their BE course. In this case, they need to provide for a couple of years of work before they enroll for an M-Tech degree. This will help them save sufficient money to pay the M-tech fees, and take care of board and lodging costs.

The advantage of short term goals is that they give clarity. You are able to plan for the immediate future keeping the long-term goal in mind. The other advantage is that you can modify your goal. It is quite possible that once you start working you may not want to undertake a Masters degree in technology. You may feel that on-the-job training is a better way to acquire the relevant knowledge. In that case, you need to modify your short-term goal.

This is not all. A short-term goal is more realistic, and easier to achieve. It does not overwhelm you.
